The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) is an agency of the Republic of India, charged with the military's research and development, headquartered in New Delhi, India. It is under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defence, Government of India. It was formed by the merger of the Technical Development Establishment and the Directorate of Technical Development and Production with the Defence Science Organisation. DRDO Duties & Functions- To keep the defence minister informed about new techno developments in the realm of warfare, To serve as a nodal agency for import and export of technology, To administer the affairs of aero development agency, To study and research in areas having a bearing on national security, To analyse information and available technology in terms of their relevance and utility, To act on matters acquired by the ministry under Patent Act 1970 (39), To purchase land and do construction work on the same, To prepare designs, plans and programmes in scientific fields, and To supervise the scientific labs and establishments of the department. In performing these wide ranging innovate functions, the DRDO and the defence ministry are assisted by several committees, councils and boards. With a network of 52 laboratories, which are engaged in developing defence technologies covering various fields, like aeronautics, armaments, electronics, land combat engineering, life sciences, materials, missiles, and naval systems.
