Bicycles are a part of our lives. We learn to ride them when we are small and they are a major means of transportation until we are old enough to drive a car. The bicycle started out as a toy wooden horse, much like a rocking horse on wheels. The horse could be moved by pushing it with your feet against the ground. It first appeared in France around 1790 and was called the "celerifere."

In 1816 a German man named Karl von Drasis added a front wheel that could turn. Now the horse could be steered accurately. This new type of toy was called the "dandy horse." About twenty years later a Scotsman added pedals that turned the back wheels. This made the horse move more easily and it could go a lot faster.

The first two wheeled vehicle that did not have the horse frame was invented in 1860 in France. The pedals were connected to the front wheel. It did not take long to discover that larger wheels could turn faster with less effort than it took to turn small wheels. The English quickly came out with a bicycle with a front wheel about five feet high and a very small back wheel. The seat of this bicycle was so high off the ground people needed to use a ladder just to get on!

In the late 1870's the English changed the bicycle once more. It had front and back wheels that were the same size and looked very much like the bicycles used today.
