The Indian Forest Service (IFS) is one of the three All India Services, the other two being the Indian Administrative Service & the Indian Police Service.

IFS was created in 1966 under the All India Services Act 1951.

Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy (IGNFA) was constituted in the year 1987 by renaming the erstwhile Indian Forest College, which was originally established in 1938 for training senior forest officers.

Training details:

The Course program is conducted through a series of class room sessions, tours, excursions and specialized modules. Besides, assignments are given from time to time on specified subjects. Attendance in all these activities is compulsory.

Class Room Sessions

Lecture sessions are primarily intended for systematic transfer of knowledge. Probationers are advised to be alert and participate in the training/learning process.

Tours/Excursions/Exercises

Study tours form an integral part of the training; and are arranged so that the Probationers can leam and understand the practice of forestry in its variations in different states of India.
