Default Re: Eligibility for IAS Exam

Indian Administrative Service (IAS) exam is conducted by UPSC for recruitment of eligible candidates for civil services.

Eligibility Criteria for exam :

Candidate must be citizen of India.


Age limit:
21 to 32 years;

There is relaxation of the upper age limit for SC, ST, OBC, physically handicapped candidates as well as ex- servicemen.

Qualification :
Candidate must possess a Bachelor's degree from any of Indian universities or an equivalent qualification from any recognized university.

Exam Pattern
The preliminary examination will consist of two objective type (multiple choice questions) paper.

Paper I- General Studies (2 hours)
Paper II- Aptitude Test (2 hours)

The question papers (test booklets) will be available in both languages, English and Hindi.

For both writing and marking answers in the OMR sheet (Answer sheet), candidates will have to use black ball pen only.

Use of pencil or ink pen would not be allowed. Blind candidates would be allowed an extra 20 minutes of time for each paper.

Exam Syllabus
Candidates preparing to appear for the UPSC IAS Preliminary Exam should remain acquainted with the syllabus for the preliminary exam.
The IAS preliminary exam comprises of two papers; paper I and II. The time duration and syllabus for IAS Prelims are as follows:
Paper I - General Studies
Marks: 200
Duration: 2 hours
Topics
Current events of national and international importance
History of India and Indian National Movement
Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World
Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights, Issues, etc.
Economic and Social Development Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.
General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialization
General Science

Paper II - Civil Services Aptitude Test (CSAT)
Marks: 200
Duration: 2 hours
Topics
Comprehension
Interpersonal skills including communication skills
Logical reasoning and analytical ability
Decision-making and problem-solving
General mental ability
Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc. - Class X level)
Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. - Class X level)
English language comprehension skills (Class X level)
