This test enables one to be eligible to apply for the position of Lecturer/Assistant Professor in Universities and Colleges located anywhere in India.

This test also makes one eligible for Junior Research Fellowship but the maximum age limit to apply for fellowship is 28 years and since you are 38, you can only take the test for Lectureship.

UGC NET is taken by CBSE twice in a year for determining the eligibility of Indian nationals for the:
Award of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) and/or
Eligibility for Lectureship in Indian universities and colleges.

PSUs can utilise UGC-NET scores for the recruitment process in their organisations in disciplines like management, corporate communications, science (R&D), finance, human resources etc. of the posts of executives.
