I have completed 12th class and want to become an IAS officer. What is the process of becoming an IAS officer?

Civil servant in the department of administration is known as Indian Administrative Service Officer.

To become IAS Officer, an exam held by central government which are made on the state level. Its norms and condition are governed by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC).

To Become IAS officer---

Step 1:

-Must have obtained a Bachelor Degree after higher secondary in any discipline from a UGC recognized university.
-There is no minimum percentage required to be eligible to this exam.

Step 2:
-Qualify the Civil Service Exam
-The all India combined competitive examination for Civil Service comprises of two stages.
They are--
Preliminary Examination
Main Examination

Preliminary examination
-Exam is usually conducted in the month of May/ June every year.
-This exam will be in objective type format.
-The exam consists of two papers, general studies and an optional subject.
-There will be questions for 150 marks from general section and 300 marks from optional subject.

Candidates can choose their optional subject from the list given below.
Agriculture
Geography
Medical Science
Philosophy
Physics
Political Science
Civil Engineering
Commerce
Economics
Sociology
Statistics
Zoology
Psychology
Public Administration
Electrical Engineering
Geology
Indian History
Law
Mathematics
Mechanical Engineering
Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Science
Botany
Chemistry

-The medium of instructions will be in English and in Hindi.
-Candidates can expect questions in the optional paper from the degree level syllabus.
-Time limit of each paper is two hours.
-Candidates who have cleared the preliminary examination are eligible for the main exam.

Step 3:
-Clear the Main Examination
-Main examination is of descriptive type.
-It consists of nine papers.
-Time duration for each paper is three hours.
-It comprises of the following papers.

One Indian Language for 300 marks
English for 300 marks
General Essay for 300 marks
General Studies of 300 marks
Any two optional papers for 300 marks each

Step 4: Personal Interview
-The final selection for Indian Administrative Service is carried out on the basis of personal interview.
-Usually the final interview is conducted in the month of April/ May every year.
-Candidates can expect questions on matters of general interest.
-Once selected, all candidates are required to undergo compulsory foundation training.

Sorry, you are not eligible for the IAS exam. The minimum qualification required for becoming an IAS officer is graduation. To become an IAS officer candidate has to crack Civil Service Exam conducted by UPSC once every year.

Eligibility Criteria:

Applicant must be Indian Citizen.
Interested candidates must have a graduation degree in any stream.
Age of the general candidate should be between - 21 to 30 years.
Age of the OBC candidate should be between - 21 to 33 years.
Age of the SC/ST candidate should be between - 21 to 35 years.

Number of Attempts:
General - 4
OBC - 7
SC/ST - No Limit

Selection Procedure:
The selection is through three phases:-
CSAT - Civil Service Aptitude Test - Preliminary Exam
Civil Service Main Exam
Personal Interview

To be an IAS officer one has to follow the steps given below:-

Step 1
You have to fill the UPSC's Civil Services exam “Application Form” along with “Information Brochure” from any of the “Head Post Offices or Post Offices” spread throughout the country and then send the filled Application form to:
The Secretary,
Union Public Service Commission,
Dholpur House,
New Delhi - 110011.

Step 2

The aspirants in the month of May or June have to take the Civil Services Apptitue Test i.e CSAT Consisting of two papers.
Paper Marks Time
1. General Knowledge 200 2 Hr.
2. Comprehension and logical reasoning 200 2 Hr.

Step 3
Candidates who qualified in the “Civil Services Apptitude Test" are supposed to take the final exam (generally held in the month of October) having following papers:
1 Essay type Indian Language Qualifying Paper (300 marks)
1 English Qualifying Paper (300 marks)
1 General Essay type paper (200 marks)
2 General Studies papers (300 marks each)
4 Optional subjects papers (300 marks each)

Step 4
The final stage is the interview. The final stage test aspirant’s personality and mental ability.
Selected candidates are admitted to Lal Bahadur Sastri National Academy of Administration, LBSNAA at Mussoorie to impart training to IAS probationers.
And after completion of training in various fields of administrative importance, aspirants are posted as per requirements of the Central and State Governments.

Indian Administrative Service Officer examination is conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). To become an IAS officer the applicant should fulfill following eligibility details:

The applicant should hold a degree of any of Universities incorporated by an Act of the Central or State Legislature in India.

Nationality
A candidate must be either:—
A citizen of India, or
A subject of Nepal, or
A subject of Bhutan, or
A Tibetan refugee who came over to India before 1st January, 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India,
or
A person of Indian origin who has migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania, Zambia, Malawi,

Age Limits
A candidate must have attained the age of 21 years.

Indian Administrative Services officer recruitment examination is done through the “UPSC held Civil Services” examination. To become an IAS officer have to appear and clear the Civil Service Exam conducted by UPSC. This examination has following sections:

Preliminary Examination
Main Examination

Preliminary examination is usually conducted in the month of May/ June every year. the eligibility details are as following:

Eligibility:

The prelims examination covers following subjects:

IAS Preliminary Examination CSAT Paper - 1 (GS)
Paper I - (200 marks) Duration : Two hours

Current events of national and international importance.

History of India and Indian National Movement.

Indian and World Geography - Physical, Social, Economic Geography of India and the World.

Indian Polity and Governance - Constitution, Political System, Panchayati Raj, Public Policy, Rights Issues, etc.

Economic and Social Development -Sustainable Development, Poverty, Inclusion, Demographics, Social Sector initiatives, etc.

General issues on Environmental Ecology, Bio-diversity and Climate Change - that do not require subject specialisation

General Science.

IAS Preliminary Examination CSAT Paper - 2 (APTITUDE)
Paper II- (200 marks) Duration: Two hours

Comprehension

Interpersonal skills including communication skills;

Logical reasoning and analytical ability

Decision-making and problemsolving

General mental ability

Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. - Class X level)

English Language Comprehension skills (Class X level).

The Examination shall comprise two compulsory papers of 200 marks each.
Paper I - (200 marks) Duration: Two hours
•Current events of national and international importance.
•History of India and Indian National Movement.

Note 1 : Questions relating to English Language Comprehension skills of Class X level (last item in the Syllabus of Paper- II) will be tested through passages fromEnglish language only without providing Hindi translation thereof in the question paper.

Note 2 : The questions will be of multiple choice, objective type.

Note 3: It is mandatory for the candidate to appear in both the Papers of Civil Services (Prelim) Examination for the purpose of evaluation. Therefore a candidate will be disqualified in case he/ she does not appear in both the papers of Civil Services (Prelim) Examination.

B. Main Examination :
The written examination will consist of the following papers: Qualifying Papers:

Paper‐ A - 300 Marks (One of the Indian Language to be selected by the candidate from the Languages included in the Eighth Schedule to the Constitution).

Paper‐ B English:- 300 Marks Papers to be counted for merit

Paper‐I Essay - 250 Marks

Paper‐II General Studies–I 250Marks (Indian Heritage and Culture, History and Geography otherworld and Society)

Paper‐III General Studies –II 250 Marks (Governance, Constitution, Polity, Social Justice and International relations)

Paper‐IV General Studies –III 250 Marks (Technology, Economic Development, Bio‐diversity, Environment, Security and Disaster Management)

Paper‐V General Studies –IV 250Marks (Ethics, Integrity and Aptitude)

Paper‐VI Optional Subject – Paper 1 250Marks

Paper‐VII Optional Subject – Paper -2 250 Marks Sub Total (Written test) 1750
