Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) was first started by the OECD Development Centre in 2009. It is based on the OECD’s Gender, Institutions and Development Database.

Social Institutions of the OECD development center are defined as the formal and informal laws that restrict women’s and girls’ access to rights, justice and empowerment opportunities.

Social Institutions and Gender Index (SIGI) is a cross-country measure of discrimination against women in social institutions.
