The Department of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) is one of the earliest departments at IITM.
Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination for admission to the 5 Year integrated Master of Arts Program (M.A) in one among the following 2 stream:
English Studies
Development Studies
Economics

Eligibility
You should have passed 10+2 in any stream from any recognized Board.

Important Dates

Online Application process starts December 19, 2012
Online Application process ends January 18, 2013
Payment of examination fee through Indian
Bank challan - Starts December 19, 2012
Payment of examination fee through Indian

Bank challan - Ends January 25, 2013
Last date for receiving Completed Application from the candidate by post January 28, 2013

Admit Card availability for download by candidate - Starts March 18, 2013

Admit Card availability for download by candidate - Ends April 18, 2013

HSEE-2013 Examination April 21, 2013
Result declaration on Website May 15, 2013
Offer letters to candidates starts: 16th May, 2013

Syllabus

The questions in the HSEE Entrance Exam are asked for analyzing skills and knowledge of the candidates.
The candidate has to practice
English language,
Analytical and quantitative ability and
General studies.

The basics of all these streams are as follow:


English

Vocabulary Skill, Remedial Grammar, improving Sentences and Reading Comprehension and Inferential Skill are the topics included in the syllabus.

Analytical and Quantitative Ability
linear equations, elementary trigonometry, Numbers, Algebra, Highest Common Factor (HCF) and Lowest Common Multiple (LCM), Data Interpretation, Analytical Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, Basic Statistics – Average, Ratio and proportion - Mixtures, Profit and Loss, Percentages etc.

General Studies
You should be thorough with the topics regarding Environment and Ecology, Contemporary World Affairs (post-World War II) and Indian Society and Indian Economics.

The Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE) is an admission test conducted by Indian Institute of Technology Madras to provide admission in 5 year integrated Masters of Arts (M.A) degree programme in Economics, English Studies and Development Studies.


Eligibility:
Candidates can take the exam provided they must have passed 10+2 class conducted by such as CBSE, New Delhi; Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, New Delhi; etc.

The detailed eligibility criterion is in the file. You can get to read about it when you download the file.

Syllabus of the exam:

Pattern of the exam:
The exam has two parts, Part I is Part II. The medium of the exam is English.
Part I will have objective type multiple choice questions. the duration of the exam is 2½ hours.

Part II will have essay type questions and the duration of the exam is ½ hour.

Application fee:
The online application fees (Exclusive of Bank Charges)
Rs. 1600/- (for general category, OBC students)
Rs. 800/- (SC/ST, Physically Disabled).
No Application fee for Female candidates

How to pay the fee:
Candidates have to pay the fee through Indian Bank Challan at any branch of Indian Bank across the country or by Demand Draft drawn in any nationalised Bank in favour of Chairman, HSEE, IIT Madras, payable at Chennai.

Tentative dates of the exam:
Online Registration will open- on 20th December 2012
The examination will be held in- 1st week of May 2013
Last date for submission of application- last week of January 2013
Result declaration on Website: 1st week of June 2013
