The spirit of revolution was at work.
St. Antonie was one of the poorest parts of Paris. There was a certain wine-shop in St. Antonie owned by one Mr. Defarge. He was a strong man of about thirty. His wife Madame, Defarge, helped him in managing the shop. She had sharp eyes and firm manner of doing things. As she sat in her wine-shop, she was always knitting. The wine-shop was visited by a number of poor people. They came there to meet together and plot the fall of the Government. They met there to plan a revolution.
