The International Space Station (ISS) is a space station also known as habitable artificial satellite which is established in low Earth orbit. Its first component launched into orbit in 1998. The ISS is now the largest artificial body in orbit and can be seen with the naked eye from Earth. This module was designed to provide the station's initial propulsion and power. The U.S.-funded and Russian-built Zarya, which means "Sunrise". The Zarya module is now used primarily for its storage capacity and external fuel tanks. ISS Zarya Specifications: Length 41.2 feet Diameter 13.5 feet Mass 42,600 pounds Launch date Nov. 20, 1998 ISS Zarya: Zarya also known as the Functional Cargo Block or FGB was the first module of the International Space Station to be launched. It is built from December 1994 to January 1998 in Russia at the Khrunichev State Research and Production Space Center (KhSC) in Moscow, Zarya's control system was developed by the Khartron Corp. (Kharkiv, Ukraine). Zarya was launched on 20 November 1998, on a Russian Proton rocket from Baikonur Cosmodrome Site 81 in Kazakhstan to a 400 km (250 mi) high orbit with a designed lifetime of at least 15 years.
