Intending to realize change and advance through instruction, the Tmt.Kannammal Educational Trust was constituted in 1985 and begun Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College. Inside three years of its initiation, Dr. M.G.R. Designing College was established in 1988, and the Thai Moogambigai Dental College was begun in the year 1991. Both the schools obtained Deemed University status in 2003 as Dr. M.G.R. Instructive and Research Institute according to the requests of the University Grants Commission, New Delhi and the Union Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Government of India, New Delhi.

Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering

Begun in 1993 offering a B.E. program in Electrical and Electronics Engineering endorsed by AICTE with an admission of 60. The B.E. program was licensed by National Board of Accreditation in the year 2002.

In the year 2003 the school was lifted to the status of Deemed to be University. In the year 2007 the school was lifted to the status of University with B+ Grade in NAAC.
