Madurai Kamaraj University was founded in 1966. The Directorate of Distance Education of the University provides education to approx 1.30 lakhs students. The university has eighteen Schools with seventy- three Departments. The University has 109 associated Colleges (9 independent) comprising other authorized institutions and seven evening colleges. It offers the good placement with good knowledge & skills to its students. Madurai Kamaraj University was known as Madurai University in ancient time. The university got its name after the historical city of Madurai, the ancient capital of the Pandyan rulers and the seat of three famous Tamil academies. Its nucleus was the Extension centre of the University of Madras settled at Madurai.
