The IIT in Mumbai was established in 1958. It is the second of its kind.
The IIT Bombay was the first to be set up with foreign assistance.

In 1961 Parliament decreed the IITs as Institutes of National Importance. IITB has grown from strength to strength to emerge as one of the top technical universities in the world.

IIT Bombay is ranked overall 202 globally and 46th among Asian institutes in the QS World University Rankings for 2015.
