Well Dr. Amar Singh, demitted office as CMD of the food corporation of India on May 28, 2013

C Viswanath of the Andhra Pradesh cadre has taken charge as the chairman and managing director of Food Corporation of India (FCI), the public sector undertaking.

Viswanath, a 1981-batch IAS officer, is currently on a seven-year central deputation. His previous posting was as additional secretary with the ministry of information and broadcasting.

Mr. Viswanath has earlier served as Joint Secretary with the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, and worked in the same capacity with the Department of Food and Public Distribution Warehousing Development and Regulatory Authority, among other key posts.

Function of FCI


The Corporation is primarily tasked with the procurement, storage and movement of two major cereal grains — wheat and rice.

As one of India’s largest corporations and the largest supply chain management in Asia, FCI operates through five zonal and 26 regional offices spread all over India.

FCI Objectives

Effective price support operations for safeguarding the interests of the farmers.

Distribution of foodgrains throughout the country for public distribution system.

Maintaining satisfactory level of operational and buffer stocks of foodgrains to ensure
