There is more than one path to becoming a chief financial officer at a company but for any medium to large size corporation, you will probably need a master’s degree in business administration.

And while finance is a large part of the skill set needed to be a CFO, to be successful a CFO needs to have a strong knowledge of accounting as well as finance.

You need a broad range of skills beyond knowing the ABCs of accounting. You must be a business strategist, think like someone on the board of directors and be familiar with technology

CFO Qualifications:

A minimum of 8, preferrably 10, years experience in a senior role.

CPA designation preferred.

Candidates have Masters Degree in Accounting, Finance or Business.

Having up to date knowledge of current financial and accounting computer applications

Excellent verbal, analytical, organizational and written skills
