VCU or Virginia Commonwealth University fulfills the federal mandate to ensure all researchers involved in human subject’s research are trained by requiring initial and continuing education through the Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI). Initial CITI Training Requirement VCU requires all research personnel on a study to complete the Collaborative IRB Training Initiative (CITI) Basic Human Subjects Protection course before beginning human subject’s research. The CITI course and exam are web-based and can be accessed at its website. All the modules listed for VCU must be completed. Most modules include a short quiz. An aggregate passing score of 80% is required. CME’s and CEU’s are available for CITI completion. Training must be complete and current before submissions of any type (initial, continuing review, etc.) will be forwarded to the IRB for review. The CITI Refresher course in Human Subjects Protection does not qualify as a Basic course. Make sure to take the Basic course first. In addition, CITI’s Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) course does not meet the IRB’s requirement so ensure to complete the Basic Human Subjects Protection course. Following completion of the Basic course, continuing education in human subjects protection is required every 2 years through the completion of the CITI Human Subjects Protection Refresher course. CITI Continuing Education Requirement Every 2 years, individuals who have completed the CITI Basic Human Subjects Protection course must complete the CITI Refresher in Human Subjects Protection. To maintain current CITI training, all research personnel must complete the CITI Refresher training before the expiration date of the Basic course. The Basic course expires 2 years after the original completion date. CITI sends an email reminder to the email address you register with. Submissions of all types (initial, continuing review, etc.) will not be forwarded for IRB review until research personnel CITI accounts are current Contact Detail: Virginia Commonwealth University 800 East Leigh Street PO Box 980568 Richmond, VA 23298
