Unlocking the Gates How and why Leading Universities are opening up access to their courses Is the name of the book written by Taylor Walsh.

This book deals with the subject how universities have opened up their courses especially the undergraduate one’s to the new constituencies of the learners in order to reach out to them by opening their online courses.

Ms. Walsh has written this book for ITHAKA S+R the non profit arm of the strategic consulting and research arm of the not for profit organisation ITHAKA, based in New York.

Walsh first describes how early systems, such as Columbia University’s Fathom and the joint not-for-profit venture between Oxford, Princeton, Yale and Stanford, were not immune to the dotcom revolution these institutes were caught up in the contagious buzz of the seemingly unlimited money making potential of the internet around at the turn of the 21st century. These institutes have the fear of being left behind.

The significant of opening up there courses can be gauged from the fact that Columbian university alone earned $25mn dollars by the launch of its programme called FATHOM.

This book gives the deep insight into the range of topics that include-

- In a digital age, how can universities distinguish themselves in competition for reputation, students, and faculty?

- How will these projects continue to sustain themselves as they mature beyond the experimental phase?

- Can higher education institutions maintain the campus-based business model that has sustained them for centuries, while also leveraging new technology to expand access to the knowledge they produce?

- And, faced with fiscal uncertainty and the need to increase access to higher education while maintaining quality, could these projects eventually have more transformative applications than we are seeing at present?
