Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions appended to it: 15 "Before you can notice any strange happenings you have got to be a good workman, you have got to be a master of your craft." Sir Alexander Fleming discovered pencillin because he was an extraordinarily good workman and a master of his craft. Modestly, he would have us believe that he was lucky. "The very first stage in the discovery of pencillin" he said, "was due to a stroke of good fortune." Perhaps the first stage of discovery was fortunate, but Alexander Fleming was ready; his was the "mind prepared." "Alexander Fleming was born on Lochfield farm in South-Western Scotland on August 6, 1881, the youngest of the eight children of High Fleming. His father died when he was only seven, but his mother, a cheerful woman of great character, supervised the running of the farm. She maintained the affection of her large family. Until he was ten, Alexander attended the nearby Loudoun Moor School. He was then transferred to Darnel School, which he attended with his brothers. Alexander learned a good deal about nature during that four mile downhill hike to school and the four mile uphill return trip. He was a quick student, and at twelve, the age limit prescribed for Darvel School, he was sent to Kilmarmuck Academy. Two years later he joined his brothers John and Robert at the home of his elder brother Thomas, who was to become a successful oculist in London. John and Robert became opticians, and ultimately started a business of their own, which they build into a leading optical laboratory. Fools do not like the company of wise men, and wise men avoid fools. Saints do not relish the company of sinners, and sinners shun the company of saints. The good find little pleasure in the company of the bad. Pleasure-seekers do not make friends with studious students. Honest men shun thieves and cheats. We can, therefore, judge a man's character by the kind of company he keeps. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Half question paper is in pdf file Contact details Jain Vishva Bharati University Ladnun, Rajasthan 341306 01581 224 332 Map location Last edited by Aakashd; December 5th, 2019 at 03:56 PM. |
