Freshmen Admissions Requirements

-You will be reviewed on the basis of your academic performance in an accredited high school or on GED scores and either SAT Reasoning Test or ACT scores.
- You must successfully complete the following coursework:
4 units of English
2 units of Foreign Language (The same language. Ex. Spanish I & Spanish II)
2 units of Social Science (including U.S. or American History)
1 unit of Biological Science
1 unit of Physical Science
1 unit of Additional Science
1 unit of Algebra I
1 unit of Geometry
1 unit of Algebra II
1 unit of Mathematics beyond Algebra II (for which Algebra II is a requirement)

-Extracurricular activities and employment experience may strengthen an application.

-You are required to submit SAT or ACT scores
-Freshman applicants under 24 years of age must submit official SAT or ACT scores.
- If your native language is one other than English then you must submit scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

Testing Codes:
SAT & TOEFL = 5909
ACT = 3178

Winston-Salem State University a Constituent Institution of the University of North Carolina, is a historically black public research university located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, United States. It was Established in 1892 .


In selecting the Freshman class, decisions are based on your:

Academic Record
Scores on the Scholastic Assessment Test (SAT) or the American College Test (ACT)

High School GPA
The admission criteria are the same for public and private school applicants.


These courses are commonly known as Minimum Course Requirements (MCR). Each student who applies for admission to Winston-Salem State University must successfully complete the following coursework:

4 units of English

Test Scores

WSSU requires applicants to submit SAT or ACT scores. We do not require subject test for admission.

Freshman applicants under 24 years of age must submit official SAT or ACT scores.

The UNC system minimum admission requirements are:

Cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher
Minimum SAT = 800 or ACT = 17
