It is part of the United States National Academies, which includes: National Academy of Sciences (NAS) National Academy of Engineering (NAE) National Research Council (NRC) UNEQUAL TREATMENT: If you are a health system superintendent or manager, yours may be among themost of difficult jobs in the nation: on a daily basis, you run with multiplechallenges, including rapidly growing health care costs, concerns about patientsafety, and negative public perceptions of health insurers. At the same time, youwork hard to provide high-quality health care products and services to an increasingly various patient population—including a growing number of racial and ethnic minorities and individuals who primarily speak a language other than English. In general, this research shows that: African Americans and Hispanics tend to receive a range of disease areas (including cancer, cardiovascular disease,HIV/AIDS, diabetes, mental health, and other chronic and infectious diseases) and clinical services; African Americans are more likely than whites to receive less popular services, Such as amputation of all or part of a member; Disparities are originated even when clinical factors, such as stage of disease presentation, co-morbidities, age, and severity of disease are taken into account Disparities are establish across a range of clinical settings, including public and private hospitals, teaching and non-teaching hospitals, etc. Disparities in care are associated with higher humanity among minorities who do not receive the same services as whites (e.g., surgical treatment for small-cell lung cancer).
