-Commenced ophthalmological training at the University of Pretoria, under Professor Hennie Meyer in 1985.
-Obtained the MMed in Ophthalmology with distinction in 1990.
-Attended St Thomas’ Hospital and Moorfields Eye Hospital in London during 1990.
-Was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Ophthalmology in 1990.
-Was elected a Fellow of the College of Surgery in Ophthalmology of the College of Medicine of South Africa in 1990.

-Awarded the Louis Leipoldt Memorial Award for the best article in the S A M J in 1986.
-Awarded the Hans Snyckers – Noristan Award for the best research paper by a general practitioner in 1985.
