Vocational Level 2 Qualifications Whilst these qualifications will be taken into consideration when guiding students about appropriate programmes, they do not equate to full GCSEs in the table below. Entry with AS levels taken early Worcester Sixth Form College supports extension work for able students during their Key Stage 4 studies and recognises that some students will come to the College having already taken all or parts of AS courses pre-16. College policy is that it is not generally advisable for students having taken AS pre-16 to progress straight to A2 with us in that subject unless they have obtained a grade A or B. Every case is, of course, treated individually and an appropriate programme negotiated in the best interests of the student. Sometimes, even students with an A or B grade opt to retake the AS year with us and this may be for one or more of the following reasons: • Difficulties matching different examination board specifications • wishing to maximise the UMS marks from the AS papers since these also count towards the overall A level result • wishing to ensure that an A grade has been obtained for each unit (since unit grades are now reported by UCAS to universities) • wishing to reinforce understanding of content of AS since this will be important for the harder and “synoptic” aspects of A2; this point is even more important now that new A Level specifications have been designed to provide more “stretch and challenge”; part of this has been the introduction of the A* grade, requiring UMS score of over 90% on certain A2 units.
