Institute for Ancient Equestrian Studies was established in the year 1994 at Hartwick College by Dr. David Anthony and Dorcas Brown .

The IAES is affiliated with the Institute for the History and Archaeology of the Volga in Samara, Russia.

The IAES is located in the Anthropology Department at Hartwick College .

Some high points have been:
* the discovery of bit wear on the teeth of horses dated to 3500 BC in Kazakstan, which pushes the beginning of horse riding back by 1500 years

* survey and excavation of Bronze Age burials, settlement and herding camps on the Samara River in Russia.

* an experimental program in which horses were ridden with bits made of hemp and horsehair rope, bone and leather in order to recreate the types of bit wear that may have been produced by the earliest riders.

* the discovery that Bronze Age chariots buried in tombs in the steppe grasslands of Russia were as old, and perhaps older than, the chariots of the ancient urban civilizations of the Near East.
