The Scholarships for Aplastic Anemia, is For young people fighting with this disease. The heavy Cost of medical bills for them and/or their families can make it financial problems to afford higher education and follow their dreams and the student get interrupt in their studies during their health condition and treatments. The Matthew Debono Memorial Scholarship Fund is for these types of the students. It was started by in the year 1986 by Sally and Manuel Debono whose son, Matthew, died from aplastic anemia. About 68 students have received this scholarship in 2012.

You are asking for the AA&MDSIF College Scholarships. The Aplastic Anemia & MDS International Foundation provides scholarships to support young people who, in fighting diseases like aplastic anemia, MDS, or PNH, may have had to interrupt their studies, extracurricular activities or jobs due to their health condition and treatments, and whose families find it financially difficult to afford higher education.

Eligibility and Award Criteria

Applicants may apply up to age 35 and must have a valid US mailing address where materials can be sent.


The Matthew Debono Memorial Scholarship Program will award at least $15,000 in one-year scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,000 each.


The Applicants must have been diagnosed with a bone marrow failure disease, specifically aplastic anemia, MDS or PNH. A physician’s letter stating the applicant’s diagnosis will be required.


Applicants must be high school seniors or graduates who plan to enroll, or students

Application deadline:

The Applications are accepted once a year between March 1 and March 31 with an April 1 deadline.

Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of:

Academic record/honors
Essays
Financial Need Based on Cost of Attendance and EFC Amount
Application Quality (neatness, completeness, clarity, following directions)
Demonstrated leadership
Participation in school and community activities
Work experience
Outside reference
Meeting eligibility requirements (see question 2)
