The Department of Economics is one of the oldest and largest Departments of NEHU. It was established in 1974.
The Department ranks admirably among the Indian Institutions of higher learning as per the ranking of IDEAS/RePEc
The department offers courses in Economics at the level of MA/M.Sc., M.Phil. and Ph.D.
Masters Degree Program-
The Masters Degree Program (M.A./M.Sc.) in Economics follows a 4-Semesters (2-years) Choice-Based Credit System (with an enrolment capacity of 55 students per year/session).
Applications for admission are normally invited by the University during May-June and admission is given in the month of August every year.
The program starts in the first week of August.
Doctoral Program –
The PhD program of the Department consists of two parts.
The first part consists of three courses, each carrying 4 credits, totaling 12 credits, to be taught in a Semester, followed, in the second part, by a thesis/dissertation to be prepared by the student under the guidance of a research supervisor.
M.Phil Program –
The M.Phil program consists of two parts carrying 24 credits altogether. The first part consists of three papers, each of which carries 4 credits, totaling 12 credits together, to be taught in a Semester, followed, in the second part, by a dissertation to be prepared by the student under the guidance of a research supervisor, which carries another 12 credits.
