Candidates whose native language is not English are required to submit English Proficiency Requirements for admission in Youngstown State University.

English Proficiency Requirements-

Undergraduate Programs-

All applicants for undergraduate admission must present evidence of proficiency in the English language in one of the following ways:

Official Test of English as a Foreign Language Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

An official TOEFL score of 500 or higher (paper and pencil test) or a computer-based score of 173 or higher, or a score of 61 or higher on the Internet Based Test (iBT) sent directly from the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

The TOEFL code for YSU is 1975.

Scores over two years old by the beginning of the term you wish to enter are not acceptable

Proficiency may also be demonstrated by a minimum score of 69 on the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), or a 5.5 composite score (with a minimum of 5.0 on each sub-scale) on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or a minimum score of 950 on the SAT II English Language Proficiency Test.

English Proficiency Requirements is waived for applicants educated in English-medium institutions located in countries where English is the primary and official language

Applicants who have graduated from a U.S. high school or international school that follows the U.S. high school curriculum are exempt from English proficiency testing, but must submit SAT or ACT scores.

Graduate Programs

A minimum score of 550 on the paper-based, 213 on the computer-based, or 79-80 on the internet- based (iBT) Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) by graduates of foreign universities who are non-native English speakers.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System) as an alternative to the TOEFL exam for international students.

(A score of 6.5 on the IELTS test equates to a 550 on the TOEFL.)

Proficiency may also be demonstrated by a minimum score of 77 on the Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB)

Proficiency testing is also available on request. YSU’s English Language Institute administers both the institutional TOEFL and MELAB tests. The score for the institutional TOEFL test taken at Youngstown State University is valid at Youngstown State University only.

Applicants who completed high school or at least 24 semester credit hours in the following countries are not required to submit a standardized test score demonstrating English language proficiency:

Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Botswana, the British Caribbean and the British West Indies, Canadian Provinces (except Quebec), Cook Islands, Dominica, Fiji, Gambia Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Kiribati, Liberia, Mauritius, Micronesia, Namibia, Nauru, New Zealand, Nigeria, Niue, Northern Mariannas Islands, Papua-New Guinea, St. Christopher and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, Solomon Islands, Trinidad & Tobago, United Kingdom, and the United States (except Puerto Rico), Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
