Vector Control Research Centre (VCRC) is located in Puducherry and it was founded in July 1975. It is one of the permanent institutes under the Indian Council of Medical Research, Department of Health Research, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India, New Delhi.

VCRC is recognized as a centre of excellence for research and training in vector-borne diseases and control by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, Govt. of India.

Courses Offered:

1. PG Diploma in Medical Entomology

Duration of the Course: One academic year.

Total number of students to be admitted: Twelve (12)

Medium of instruction: English


Eligibility for Admission:

Category - I
Candidates should have passed in I class (II class in the case of SC/ST) in one of the following examinations in 12+3+2 pattern of any University accepted by the Academic Council of Pondicherry University (i) M.Sc. with Zoology or Biology as one of the subjects, or (ii) M.Sc. with Life Sciences.

Category - II
Candidates should be employed in either Government or Non-government agencies and sponsored by the employer. Such candidates should have passed (i) B.Sc. (12+3 pattern) with Zoology or Biology as one of the subjects and must have 5 years of regular service or (ii) M.Sc. (12+3+2 pattern) with Zoology or Biology as one of the subjects.

Method of Selection:
Selection will be based upon their performance in the entrance test, which include a written test and viva-voce.

Paper I : Anophelines and their medical importance – Malaria
Paper II: Culicines and their Medical Importance
Paper III: Sand flies, Black flies, Muscoid flies and their medical Importance
Paper IV: Fleas, Lice, Ticks, Mites and their medical importance
Paper V: Bugs, Cockroaches, Cyclops and Venomous arthropods
Paper VI: Chemical Control of Vectors
Paper VII: Biological & Environmental Methods for the Control of Vectors
Paper VIII: Integrated Methods of Vector Management


2. Applied immunology-Six months:

Duration: Six Months

Eligibility:
I and II year Msc., Lifesciences students of Pondicherry Central University

Somatic, Secreted (ES) and surface Antigens: (SLH)
• Source, nature and solubility of antigens and extraction (SLH) Characterization, purification and quantification procedures (SLH)
• Polyclonal and Monoclonal Antibodies (SLH)
• Principles of immunization (AE)
• Schedules for production of polyclonal antisera (AE)
• Characterization and isotyping of immunoglobulins (AM)
• Monoclonal antibodies: Hybridoma generation, cloning, selection and production of monoclonal antibodies both in vitro and in vivo (AM)
• Purification, characterization and sensitivity and specificity of monoclonal antibodies (AM)

Immunoassays: (SLH)
• Principles and methods of antigen-antibody reaction: Agglutination, immunodiffusion, immunoelectrophoresis (AE)
• Immunoblotting (AM)
• Immunofluorescent antibody techniques (AE)
• ELISA (AM)

Application of Cellular immunology: (SLH)
• Immunocompetent cells and their markers (AE)
• Separation and purification of immunocompetent cells (AE)
• Principles and methods of Immunohistochemistry and immunohistopathology (AE)
• Application of immunodiagnostic techniques in infectious diseasesSLH)
• Viral, bacterial, protozoa and helminthes infection (SLH)

Vaccine: (SLH)
• Principles and strategies of vaccine development (SLH)
• Recent advancements in vaccine development (SLH)
• Insect immunity against parasites and pathogensSLH)
• Insect haemocytes and immune proteins (KPP)
• Development and characterization and application of immune protein (KPP)
• Immune protein in parasite detection (KPP)

• In vitro culture/maintenance of parasites and preparation of ES antigens (SLH)
• Characterization of antigens through SDS polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (SLH)
