Default Re: Study Opportunities in United States of America

You have not mentioned what is your educational qualification as of now and which course you wish to pursue. However if you want to go for an associate's or a bachelor's degree program, you must meet the following requirements:
- Passed secondary school
- Proficiency in English language i.e. TOEFL or IELTS
- Financial arrangements to support your education and living expenses
- In addition, SAT or ACT may also be required.
For Graduate level studies i.e. a Master's degree of one or two years or a doctoral degree of three to five years period, you need:

- To submit a proof of having passed an equivalent three year bachelor's degree.
- Proof of English language proficiency - TOEFL or IELTS
- GRE,GMAT
- Adequate financial arrangements.

Academic year in US colleges and universities:

Duration: About 32 weeks; usually divided into two terms of 16 weeks each. Some of the institutions adopt quarterly system which consists of three terms of 11 weeks each. Very few adopt three semester system, which consists of three equal terms of 15 weeks each. Short term summer school consists of six to eight weeks period.

Commencement: Between late August to late September.
Holidays: Depending on institutions, holidays for a week to a month are given.

Generally, the Indian students opting for undergraduates courses in the US have to lose one academic year to be eligible because of the difference in the academic standards between the two countries. However, the Advanced Placement Program introduced by the College Board of the US offers a respite. Those who clear this program with the required scores are offered a full year's credit.

This program consists of two broad sections viz. MCQ (multiple choice questions) and Free Response aimed at assessing candidate's understanding of the discipline through his / her ability to produce clear and coherent answers.

Interested candidates have to first register themselves at the nearest examination center and then attend the required classes to appear in the tests. The exams are generally held in the second week of May followed by results in July. For getting complete details, you may contact any of the USEFI offices at Ph 033-3576208- 9
