Default Re: Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Australia

There are two types of institutions which offer Vocation Education and Training. They are: Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutes and private training organisations such as private colleges, industry training centres and individual enterprises. These institutions offer a wide variety of training, ranging from preparatory and entry level, through operator and technician professional levels. A broad spectrum of programs and learning opportunities are delivered with relevant up-to date industry experience.

VET provides practical and career-oriented training which is in line with the requirements of the industries. The courses have been designed as per needs of the contemporary economy and the skills mastered by individuals enable them to get themselves placed in suitable jobs. VET system is highly flexible and advanced. VET is a tertiary option which helps the students to utilize their skills in the industry or to get themselves admitted in institutes / universities providing higher education.

Diplomas and Advanced Diplomas under the VET system are also treated as a good foundation for the Bachelor's degree qualifications. The pathways for those with industrial qualification to acquire higher education are being enhanced. Around sixty per cent of international students enter higher education after completing their study in VET.

Under the VET system short term training programs to advanced VET programmes are offered with a wide choice of skills covering hospitality, information technology, business, engineering, health and beauty etc. These study courses are provided by Technical and Further Education (TAFE) colleges (government institutions) and also by private vocational education and training institutions. Same process of registration and accreditation is followed by VET institutions, whether government or private. That means there is no difference in respect of quality of education and their recognition. Only recognised degrees / diplomas are awarded under the system as the VET sector is supported by the Australian Qualifications Framework.
