Adequate understanding of instructions in English is necessary for entry into an Australian university course. The most commonly accepted indicators that your English is up to standard are: English is your first language; satisfactory achievement in secondary tertiary studies to date in an English speaking country; English was the language of instruction in your secondary tertiary studies to date.

For higher education entry, you require an overall score of six or better on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). For TAFE and special studies entry, an overall score of between 5 and 6 is required, depending on the demands of the courses. For secondary entry, an overall IELTS score of between 5 to 6 is recommended depending on the requirements of the school and the availability of English language support. A score of 550 or better on the American Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is also accepted. As different qualifications require different IELTS results so students are advised to check the student visa requirements on the Australian Government's immigration website: immi.gov.au/study. However, in case your IELTS test scores do not meet the student visa requirements you may undertake intensive English language training (ELICOS) before you commence your course. All Australian universities and many vocational Education Training (VET) colleges have either their own English language centers or have links with English language colleges.

Yes Australian Universities has English language proficiency requirements for its courses for all students.

The following English tests are accepted by most of Australian Universities.
-IELTS - Academic
-Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic
-Teaching of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) – PBT and iBT
-University of Cambridge: ESOL Examinations for the Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) OR the Certificate in Advanced English (CAE)

If you are required to demonstrate your English language proficiency to the Australian government in order to get a student visa, you need to have good score in an English language test such as IELTS (International English Language Testing System).
