Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU), Baroda was established as the Baroda College of Science in 1881 and it became a university in 1949 after the independence of the country. Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda is named after Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III, the former ruler of Baroda.
