UNIT 2 – UNDERLYING CONCEPTS IN POLITICAL SCIENCE 17 Hrs.
Nature of State in India: Definition of State- Theories of State- Concepts of Democracy- Liberty- Freedom: Negative
and Positive Freedom.

UNIT 3 – EQUALITY 17 Hrs.
Importance of Equality: Formal Equality and Equality of Opportunity- Egalitarianism: Background of Inequalities and
Differential Treatments.

UNIT 4 – RIGHTS AND JUSTICE 17 Hrs.
The Universality of Rights: Natural Rights - Social Contract Theory- Rights and Political Obligation- Justice -
Indispensability of Justice: Procedural Justice- Distributive Justice.

UNIT 5 – INSTITUTIONAL LEGACIES AND MAKING OF THE CONSTITUTION 17 Hrs.
Historical inheritance and Institutional Legacies in Making of India’s Constitution- Ideological Bases of the Indian
Constitution- Preamble- Fundamental Rights and Duties and Directive Principles. Constitution as Instrument of Socio-
