The Council has been so constituted as to secure reasonable portrayal of: Government of India, State Governments/Union Territories in which there are Schools subsidiary to the Council, the Inter-State Board for Anglo-Indian Education, the Association of Indian Universities, the Association of Heads of Anglo-Indian Schools, the Indian Public Schools' Conference, the Association of Schools for the ISC Examination and individuals co-picked by the Executive Committee of the Council.


In 1952, an All India Certificate Examinations Conference was held under the Chairmanship of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Minister for Education. The fundamental reason for the Conference was to consider the substitution of the abroad Cambridge School Certificate Examination by an All India Examination. This set the motivation for the foundation of the Council.


The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations is focused on serving the country's kids, through amazing instructive undertakings, engaging them to contribute towards a compassionate, just and pluralistic culture, advancing thoughtful living, by making energizing learning openings, with a guarantee to magnificence.

• Schools to motivate pupils towards the cultivation of:
o Excellence - The Indian and Global experience.
o Values - Spiritual and cultural - to be the bed rock of the educational experience.
• Schools to have an 'Indian Ethos', strong roots in the national psyche and be sensitive to national aspirations

As a pioneer in the arrangement of overall instructive undertakings, the Council's immense experience and knowledge is called upon in numerous gatherings, for example, the Council of Boards of School Education in India (COBSE), State Education Departments, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT), the Ministry for Human Resource Development and the Planning Commission, certifying the inherent uprightness and validity of the Council and the framework it upholds.


The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations conducts three examinations, to be specific, the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (ICSE – Class X); The Indian School Certificate (ISC - ClassXII) and the Certificate in Vocational Education (CVE - Year 12). The subject decisions and syllabuses endorsed for these examinations are shifted and gone for sustaining the one of a kind endowments of individual students


The Indian Certificate of Secondary Education has been intended to give an examination in a course of general instruction, as per the proposals of the New Education Policy 1986, through the medium of English. Private applicants are not allowed to show up for this examination.


The Indian School Certificate Examination is an examination, through the medium of English, composed as per the proposals of the New Education Policy 1986, following a two-year course of concentrates past the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (Year 10) examination or its proportionate examination.


The Certificate of Vocational Education Examination (CVE - 12) has been made as an examination, as per the proposals of the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) through the Joint Council of Vocational Education (JCVE) set up under the National Policy of Education 1986. This examination can be taken by applicants following a two year course of concentrates past the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (Year 10) examination or its proportional examination, through the medium of English.
