Vidyasagar University, named after a standout amongst the most distinguished children of Bengal and in addition one of the doyens of Indian Renaissance, Pandit Iswar Chandra Vidyasagar, has become out of a long social and instructive development in West Bengal when all is said in done and in the unified region of Midnapore specifically. Founding a University in the locale was mooted by the different associations, remarkably by the Regional Education Association, Midnapore, headed by Professor A.K.Gayen of IIT, Kharagpur.

Scholastic exercises began when through a Notification [no. 983-Edn (U), dated Calcutta the 23rd May] issued by the State Government, 30 schools of the District of Midnapore were subsidiary to the Vidyasagar University with impact from first June 1985.The establishment stone of the principle grounds at Tantigaria mouza of Midnapore Sadar Town for post graduate educating and focal organization of the University, was laid on eighteenth July 1983 by the then Hon'ble Chancellor of the University and Governor of West Bengal, Late B.D.Pande. On fifteenth January 1986, it was initiated by Shri Jyoti Basu, the then Chief Minister of West Bengal. From the following day (sixteenth January) classes initiated in six post graduate divisions: Anthropology, Applied Mathematics with Oceanology and Computer Programming, Commerce with Farm Management, Economics with Rural Development, Library and Information Science, Political Science with Rural Administration.

Political Science with Rural Administration

The Department of Political Science with Rural Administration started its journey since 1985. Initially it focused exclusively on PG teaching and research in Political Science. Later on in the year 2008, the department introduced M.Phil Programme.

This apart the department conducts certificate course in Human Rights. Our department is also the nodal department of Gandhian Studies Centre of Vidyasagar University.
