Public Health is the science and art of promoting health, preventing disease, and prolonging life through the organized efforts of the society.

Scientific basis for public health practice is provided by study of epidemiology, biostatistics, environment, demography, nutrition, economics, social and biological sciences.

The MPH students conducted a study to assess the screening status of diabetes and hypertension in the four villages of Ramanathapuram, Thondamanatham, Thuthipet and Pillayarkoopam; which fall under JIPMER rural service area.

The Great Indian BP Survey 21 Sep 2015, The MPH students were part of the team which conducted the Great Indian BP Survey organized by the Department of Cardiology, JIPMER.

It was conducted on World Heart Day (September 29th 2015) in the JIPMER campus and more than 9000 people were screened for hypertension.

The MPH team was also involved in the data entry of these 9000 screened individuals which would later be used to build a demographic profile and risk factors associated with hypertension.

The proportion of the 60 plus population increased from 6.7 per cent to 8.2 per cent of India’s total population. Significantly, over 75 per cent of the 60 plus population resides in the rural areas.
