Unit – 2

a) Chaucer: The Prologue to the Canterbury Tales
b) Milton: Paradise Lost, Book I.
c) Donne: The Extasie; Forbidding. Mourning: Love’s Alchymie; The Canonization; The Anniversaries, Love’s Deity.

Unit – 3 Shakespeare:

a) Hamlet
b) Twelfth Night
c) Julius Caesar

Unit – 4

a) Marlowe: Dr. Faustus
b) John Webster: The Duchess of Malfi.
c) Bacon: of Truth, of Death, of Studies, of Adversity, of Envy, of Love.

Unit – 5 Non-detailed study

a) Machiavelli: The Prince (English Version)
b) Cervantes: Don Quixote (English Version)
c) Thomas Browne: Urn Burial
d) Milton: Areopagitica

Note: A) Unit –I Textual passages will be given for explanation from II, III and IV units in the following manner.

i) Three passages – one from each poet- to be given from the II unit, one be attempted.

ii) Three passages- one from each play-to be given from the III unit – two to be attempted.

iii) Three passages- one from each author- to be given from the IV unit – one to be attempted.

b) Unit II, III, IV and V: From each of these units both short answer and essay-type questions as described in ‘The Amended scheme of examination’ will be asked and one question of each type will have to be attempted from each of these units.
