Weather forecasting is the application of science and technology to predict the state of the atmosphere for a given location.

The ICT is the short version in which a huge amount of weather data is collected all around the world. This information is then fed to very big computers that use numerical methods to approximate and predict the upcoming changes for the weather.

After the weather for a given area has been predicted, computers are again employed to turn the predictions into presentations.

ICT tools enhance user control and interaction, allow farmers to query and receive specific responses of weather forecast information they are interested in, provide a mechanism to collect crowdsourced feedback that can be used to improve the weather information services and products provided by UNMA, and promote timely and easy access to weather information.

ICTs and Weather Forecasting

1Uses of Telecommunications & ICT Weather Forecasting

2 Consists of 3 main elements: measuring & recording data, modelling a forecast from the data, producing the forecast information

3 Measuring & Recording data accurate forecasting requires recent & current data: –satellite images –temperatures –humidity –rainfall –wind speed & direction –cloud cover –atmospheric pressure –sunshine measurements taken at many locations around the world –at regular intervals –using satellites, ground, buoys at sea, balloons

4 Modelling a forecast data transferred around the world by high speed telecoms –Global Telecommunications System (GTS) –run by World Meteorological Organization

5 Producing a forecast forecast = prediction of future weather forecast usually selected from a website –by entering a postcode/town or selecting an area from a map most forecasts will display: –temperature –rainfall (or snow) –wind speed and direction –visibility –cloud cover variety of forecasts usually generated: –hour-by-hour, single day, 5-day, 10-day long-term forecasts less accurate than short-term

6 Producing a forecast
