Normally one should select optional, which one is familiar with, or has at least studied till the graduate level. For this one should analyze the syllabus of previous years and the question papers, and analyze past trends.

The exam pattern is below:

It consist three parts

Preliminary exam

In this exam there are two papers:

1) General study
2) Optional Subject

Main Exam:

Main Exam includes 9 descriptive type papers:

1-Any language defined in constitution of India
2-english
3-essay
4-general study
5-general study
6-optional subject-1
7-optional subject-1
8-optional subject-2
9-optional subject-2

List of optional subjects for Main Examination
• Agriculture
• Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Science
• Anthropology
• Botany
• Chemistry
• Civil Engineering
• Commerce and Accountancy
• Economics
• Electrical Engineering
• Geography
• Geology
• History
• Law
• Management
• Mathematics
• Mechanical Engineering
• Medical Science
• Philosophy
• Physics
• Political Science and International Relations
• Psychology
• Pubic Administration
• Sociology
• Statistics
• Zoology

Literature of one of the following languages
Assamese, Bengali, Bodo, Dogri, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Kashmiri, Konkani, Maithili, Malayalam, Manipuri, Marathi, Nepali, Oriya, Punjabi, Sanskrit, Santhali, Sindhi, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu and English
