The MGR university is managed by the Kannammal Educational Trust that was formed in 1985 and started as Thai Moogambigai Polytechnic College.

Within three years of the starting, Dr. M.G.R. Engineering College was founded in year 1988, and the Thai Moogambigai Dental College was started in the year 1991.

Both the colleges combined together acquired the status of Deemed University in year 2003 and become Dr. M.G.R. Educational and Research Institute.
