Default Re: CSE Mains Best optional between Anthropology & Sociology

Civil Service Exam (CSE) Mains optional subjects are totally depend upon you that which subjects you want to choose. I will suggest you to choose only those subjects in which you have the interest

Both Anthropology & Sociology subjects are good so you can select any of the course in which you are interested more and you can easily understand the matter of that subject.

Things to keep in mind while choosing optional subjects

-Choose a subject that you have an aptitude for and the one in which you have more than just a passing interest.
-Aspirant should be prepared to spend 100s of hours with the chosen subject.
-Availability of Resources: Secondly, find out how easily is the study material, guidance, coaching, etc available in a particular optional subject.
-Availability of quality guidance makes learning of the subject easy.
-Subject Knowledge: Graduation/post-graduation subject should be taken if you are comfortable with it.

Before finalizing an optional:
-Analyse the syllabus in detail
-Analyse the last ten years question paper to figure out a subject’s difficulty level
-Don’t take a subject just because everyone else is taking it
-Science subjects should be handled by people with ONLY science background
-Art subjects can be handled by ALL

The Civil Services Examination is a nationwide competitive examination in India conducted by the Union Public Service Commission for recruitment to various Civil Services of the Government of India, including the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, and Indian Police Service.

Selecting an optional subject for the UPSC IAS mains is a big conundrum for the aspirants.

About Sociology

Sociology is a social science that studies social behaviour or society, including its origins, development, organisation, networks and institutions. It deals with the functioning of human society and also of social problems.

Anthropology

“Anthropology is the study of peoples of the world, their evolutionary history, behaviour, adaptation to different environments, and how they communicate and socialise with one another.” It deals with both the biology aspect of humans as well as the social aspects.

How is sociology better

On an average, it has the higher number of takers. More candidates seem to think sociology is the better optional.
It has a relatively shorter syllabus. See UPSC syllabus for sociology optional.
It is easy to understand.
It has less science compared to anthropology making it more popular with humanities graduates.
It is a scoring subject.
There is more overlap with general studies papers.
It helps in essay paper too as at least one essay on social issues is generally asked.
Sociology also aids in ethics paper and the interview stage.

How is anthropology better

It is the better choice for science students especially those with a biology background.
It is also scoring owing to its scientific nature.
It has a very short syllabus (shorter than sociology). See UPSC syllabus for anthropology.
For anthropology writing skills are not that important as sociology.
It doesn’t include statistical tools, unlike sociology.
