What is the Scope of Mechanical engineer in Merchant Navy?

Mechanical Engineers can join Merchant Navy through following ways :

Course --1 year Graduate Marine Engineering

Approved by: D.G Shipping, Govt, Of India.

The GME is a one year residential course, where the cadets undergo theoretical classes with demonstration in well-equipped laboratories and six months training.

Eligibility :

Applicants must have done B.E / B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering with 50% marks in final year, 50% in English in 10th / +2 / Degree or Diploma from a college recognized by AICTE

Age limit :
Below 28 years at the time of entry.

Medical standard :
Applicants must be physically fit for sea service under standard norms, with eye sight up to 0.5 distance vision with no color blindness.

Minimum height should be 157 centimeters.

Career Path :
After the completion of the course the cadets will join the Ship as a Fifth Engineer.

Course---2 Years Pre-Sea Training for Diploma Holders (DME)

The pre sea training for DME is a two years residential program, where the cadets undergo theoretical classes with demonstration in well-equipped laboratories and Ship in Campus training.

Eligibility :

Applicants must have done Diploma in Mechanical /Marine / Electrical and Electronic Engineering / Naval Architecture /Electrical Engineering with 50% marks in Final year.

Applicants must have obtained atleast 50% in English at 10th or 12th std. or Diploma

Age limit :
Below 28 years at the time of entry.

Career Path :
After the completion of the course the cadets should write the Part A Examination to join the Ship as a Fifth Engineer.

As a mechanical engineer, you are eligible to join as engine cadet/junior engineer in merchant navy. For that you have to undergo a pre-sea training. The training is conducted by MERI (Marine Engineering & Research Institute) Mumbai. After successful completion of this training, you can join Merchant Navy in the engineering department.

To join merchant navy you have full fill the following criteria:
Age: not more than 26
Height: more than 170 cm
Weight: more than 65 kg
Chest: 22 cm
Eyesight: good, having not colorblindness etc.
