The Merchant Navy is a great career option after 12th; it deals in the field on cargo transportation. To join merchant you need to crack the All India Merchant Navy Entrance Test (AIMNET) that is conducted by Bharat Shipping Limited. Following are the details of it:


The eligibility is varying from post to post. It you are applying for the officer level jobs in navigational and engineering fields you would have to pursue Bachelors course in nautical science or Marine engineering.

The eligibility for joining merchant navy as Deck Cadets is class 12th with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Admission is through an entrance test which is followed by a screening test and a main written examination.

A student holding a bachelor's degree in Mechanical/ Electrical/ Technology Engineering could also join the Merchant navy as a Engine Cadet/ Fifth Engineer/ Junior Engineer.

Candidates have to be unmarried Indian citizens (male or female).

Candidates need to complete a ship-training course prior to the employment.

The course is generally short-term where the candidates are taught basic security concerns of traveling around.

After clearing the test, there is an interview and a medical test.

Normal vision is required but glasses up to plus or minus 2.5 may be allowed.

Candidates should be physically and Mentally strong, fit for sea-services under standard norms

Age Limit : 16-25 Years

There are some private institutes, which offer training for merchant navy. These institutes prepare students for jobs such as deck cadets and marine engineering jobs.
