Default Re: TN Blind School

Tennessee School for the Blind (TSB) was first conceived in the mind of James Champlin. Mr. Champlin, blind from birth, was inspired by visiting Samuel Gridley Howe and the Boston Asylum for the Blind. In 1843 Champlin launched a small private school for the blind in Nashville with the help of a group of ladies from the First Presbyterian Church and later on; it turned into Tennessee School for the Blind.

Programs that are offered at the school for students:

Vocational programs
Music programs
Orientation & mobility
Science
Mathematics
Map skills

Admissions:

As a parent you must send an interest letter to the school showing you are interested to send your child at the school.

The student who wants to take admission must meet Tennessee State Board of Education’s Definition and meet the Eligibility Standards for legally blind students.

Eligibility Standards for admission:

The child shall meet the definition of visual impairment and one or more of the following:

Visual acuity in the better eye or both eyes with best possible correction of 20/200 or less at distance and/or near viewing

Visual field restriction with both eyes with remaining visual field of 20 degrees or less

The final decision will be taken by the Superintendent in consultation with the Admissions Committee of the Tennessee School For The Blind

Minimum age:
The student must be between the ages of 3 and 21 years of age, and you must bring a copy of the applicant’s valid birth certificate
