Creative Writing Program was established in 1955 as part of the English Department and founded in 1968 as The Creative Writing Department. It offers three degree programs:

Creative Writing Program was established in the year 1955 . It offers three degree programs: M.A. in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing; B.A. in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing and M.F.A. in Creative Writing.

B.A. in English: Creative Writing

The 42 unit B.A designed to increase the student's depth and breadth of knowledge.

The required semester hours of Creative Process classes can be chosen from topics such as: Style in Fiction, Personal Narrative, American Poetics, Contemporary World Poetry, The Short-Short Story, and Plays: Reading and Viewing.

M.A. in English: Creative Writing


The M.A. in English is a course of study in the writing of fiction, poetry, or plays, with requirements evenly divided between writing workshops literature courses and Creative Process courses Also required is a creative thesis .

M.A. Creative Process course topics include the following:, Centering on Language, Elements of Playwriting, Characterization, Contemporary Non-Fiction Experimental Fiction, Feminist Poetics, The Novella, and The Prose Poem.


MFA in Creative Writing
The Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing consists of writing workshops as well as creative process and/or literature courses.

The M.F.A. degree takes about three years for a full time student to complete .

The M.F.A. is the terminal degree in creative writing.

M.F.A.s to teach in their English Programs. The M.F.A. will, like the M.A., prepare you for an English Ph.D. program.
